Answer:
An invisible power that is more specifically known as ‘false consciousness’ in itself is a theory of power that is perceived in the Marxist tradition (Johnson, 2018). The Italian communist has presented the world with the concept of ‘hegemony’ and the ‘manufacture of consent’. According to him, the capitalist state is made up of two spheres overlapping one another, political society and civil society (Worth, 2017). In this essay, a part of the fantasy novel of Sim Bajwa is analysed. The article is examined to understand the concept of power in society regarding power theories.
The article begins with the description of a woman who is flawlessly groomed and with the description of her gesture a sense of self-confidence is observed. She is being watched by every individual present in the gathering and also be a topic of gossip. The elderly women present in the audience calls her ‘shameless’ for drinking with men. The narrator feels agitated in the environment, therefore, she is on her way to the restroom. While making her way to the restroom, she could hear her mother and aunt said that the lady stays alone in London. In this paragraph, it can be understood that the woman they are talking about is a person is someone who has acted against the society’s norms and values. Civil society is when hegemony is acquired by either consent or by force (Howarth, 2015). It is commonly not acceptable when women are dominant or the ruling power. According to Gramsci civil society is the public sphere where political parties and trade unions gained concessions from the bourgeois state as well as the sphere mostly responsible for shaping ideas and beliefs and a place where the in the cultural life through the help of media bourgeois ‘hegemony’ was reproduced (Gilbert, 2015). In a similar way, the society in the article has a set of beliefs and the hegemony is reproduced in the cultural life in various ways. The lady with flawless grooming has gained the power with force as there is the absence of consent in the society.
In the restroom, the narrator meets with the same lady. She thinks of the way she adjusts with the cultural norms without her willingness. The social norms and values are constructed by the people who are considered powerful in society (Marsden & Arce, 2017). Therefore it needs to be followed by the rest of society like the narrator. She sees the way woman in the restroom who seems preoccupied with her thoughts. The narrator founder herself appreciating her in her mind for her courage to be different. According to the theory of power, power is gained through the economy as well as political support (Miller & Rose, 2017).). The women possess wealth as it is mentioned that she is living her life in her acceptable way. She is living alone in an expensive city reflects that she is wealthy which is a source of power.
In practical term, the power is constituted in the realm of ideas and knowledge. The Italian communist has presented the world with the concept of ‘hegemony’ and the ‘manufacture of consent’ (Berger, 2015). There have been influences on the debate regarding the concept of power as hegemony and civil society. It has been criticised that according to Gramsci the political struggle has been the central dominant, however, there are other aspects as well. In the article, the power is represented by the behaviour pattern of the women who has been noticed for her ‘boldness’ (Mouffe, 2014). The audience speaking about her behaviours such as her way of dressing and her way of drinking with men is the struggle that she has to go through to be in the position of power she is in. Although society is continually changing, there remains the present set of beliefs and people who are abided by them are the oppressed one as the norms and values are the ruling power of the dominant group. Therefore, there is need of struggle for the oppressive group of people who aim to be in the position of power. The lady was able to influence the narrator who is shown in the last few lines when the narrator feels the urge to walk straight similar to the walk of the lady. To understand the way current orders are maintained, the Marxist theorists focused on the coercive practices of the dominant group. The set of existing beliefs are seen as the prevailing practices that are often the tool for oppressing women and based on this theory it can be perceived that it was a method adopted to exploit the oppressed and stop them from rising and bring change in the society. However, Gramsci has also pointed out that power was not only achieved by coercion but also consent.
It is the power that drives society and operates the society. The society is divided into two groups, dominant group who are usually the makers of the rules and the oppressive group who are the follower and lacks the power to control their lives. In the article, the power is presented through the lady who portrays herself as a symbol of power. She acts as per her values, and that brings critics or the struggles since she is breaching the rules set by the higher or the powerful group of the society. In the end, it can be concluded that Gramsci’s theory of hegemony has enhanced the understanding of the article which gives the better understanding of the article.
