Question:
Frontline follows renowned New Yorker writer and Boston surgeon Atul Gawande as he explores the relationships doctors have with patients who are nearing the end of life. In conjunction with Gawande’s new book, Being Mortal, the film investigates the practice of caring for the dying, and shows how doctors himself included —are often remarkably untrained, ill-suited and uncomfortable talking about chronic illness and death with their patients .Discussion-End of life dilemmasWhy is there such a struggle when addressing end-of-life issues?
Answer:
The end of life issues are a significant concept to the doctors and nurses who care for critically or chronically ill patients. The limits of the rights of the doctors and nurses during decision-making on issues that assist patients to end their lives have been under ethical scrutiny over the past years (McCormark, 2012). The Decision making and ethical process between patient neglect and overtreatment remain a challenge for the nurses and physicians who care for the terminally ill patients.
While the innovations and advancements in medical technology have created much hope for patients and gave more a new leaf, other patients have remained in vegetative state, comatose state, or retractable pain for several months or even years, causing them and their families much pain (Cohen, 2014). There is a familiar statement that implies that doctors make the worst patients. This could be true because it is very difficult to advise people on subjects that they are experts on. The statement also applies to many other healthcare professionals including the nurses, laboratory specialists and the pharmacists. The healthcare providers could become better patients by completely trusting the healthcare professionals taking care of them when sick.
The two ethical theories of deontology and teleology regarding healthcare have differing views about morals. The strategy attempts to answer ethical questions and the impacts of the proposed approach (Cohen, 2014). According to the view, an action is considered to be ethical if it precipitates more happiness than pain. The deontological approach, commonly referred to as the law of universality gives a differing view of moral action. This creates a big struggle when addressing the end of life issue because the latter depends on the ethical standpoint of the healthcare givers.
