For Assignment 1 you start by selecting an image to help you respond to ONE of the following two questions:
How and why does the image represent your BSc/BA degree title? (There is a long list of degree titles of students sitting MN1915 with the following as examples: BSc Business and Management, BSc Management with Marketing, BSc Management with International Business (Year in Business), BSc Economics and Management), BA Modern Languages and Management).
How and why does the image represent management? (There is no requirement to make reference to your BSc/BA degree title.) The image selection options available to you for Assignment 1: Word & image are vast. All historical periods and civilizations are eligible. All of the following sources for an image would be acceptable: Instagram post (yours or someone else’s); an advertisement; a still from a video; a picture associated with a news story; an object; a product; a work of art.
You should adopt your own title for Assignment 1: Word and Image. The title should address the question – either Question A or you have chosen and the image you have selected. Having a title will help to sharpen your focus.
For Question A: How and why does the image represent your BSc/BA degree title?
You need to provide a link between your degree title and the image. What is the image?
What is the relationship between the image and your degree title?
For Question B: How does the does the image represent management?
What is the image? What is the relationship between the image and your interpretation of management?


Relationship between images and authority
Various have been used in history according to BBC radio 4 news as the replica of authority which signifies the criteria of management that was used. The first image is as shown below
The above is a coin with a portrait of Alexander the Great. This is a perfect representation of Authority because he was a great Leader who had conquered Greece, Persia and Egypt when he was 25 years old. As a result, his former general Lysimachus decided to use the portrait of Alexander the Great on his coins to signify the power that he had being his successor. From this we see that images can represent power and authority. In USA the portrait that usually circulate on the coins is for the past presidents who died and their portraits is used to signify the authority that they had. The ram’s horns in the image signify strength that Alexander the great had as leader among his people (Ferrill, 2018)
Image to portray type of a leader
An can portray the type of a leader someone was like the one shown below:
This is the image for Dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla. He was above the law during his tenure in Rome. His authority was unlimited and he even conquered and over threw neighboring nations during that time. He was able to control the usage of various assets owned by the citizens during that time. He used to authorize people to vacate their land especially when he found out that there was a possibility of minerals and he used to give them another land and never wanted to bother whether they were satisfied or not. The image portrays his serious face which can be linked directly to authority.  The image portrays a serious look that meant serious business by the leader.
Image as a clear indication of power
 Lion is the animal that is usually associated with power and strength. The leader whose image is depicted by a lion must have been a strong leader during his tenure as shown by the image below
The above is a sphinx of Taharqo which has the face of a man from Sudan who was one of the greatest leaders of the Kush kingdom(Mansour and Thiers, 2017). He ruled Kush and Egypt which is signified by the two cobras on its head dress. He conquered Egypt in 728BC after overpowering the Egyptians.
Image as a communicator
The was used to pass an important message to the general public from the leader as shown below
According to Pankhurst (2015) the suffragette penny had a clear message for the society that women were also entitled to vote. This is after the discrimination against women during voting in Britain. The message on the coin clearly depicts the leadership approach that was adopted to ensure that women were given an equal opportunity with men during general elections. Women were usually not allowed to vote because it was believed that they were represented by the men. Good management practices should enhance gender equality in the society. Individuals should not be discriminated based on their gender in the access of various benefits in the society.
Used to show how much the leaders were adored by the community they served as shown below
The image above is the statue of Ramesses II which is coated with gold as sign of honor. It was designed to depict him as a mighty ruler(Krauss,2015). During his reign Egypt succeeded through having a plenty of food and it conquered its enemies because RamessesII was a mighty warrior too. He was a father to 85 children, 40 daughters and 45 sons with 7 wives. As a result he had many people who were to bear his title more than any other Egyptian kings.
Used to depict leaders’ responsibilities
Portray the roles various leaders played in the society like the one shown below
The above image is a clear depiction of the role of the Sasanian king shapur II, who played a major role in protecting his people’s livestock from an attack from wild animals.
His hunting skills where he has leaped on to a stag and stabbed it on its neck. This king also fought the romans and forced them to create a peace treaty with him after killing their emperor who was called Julian and furthermore he promoted Zoroastrianism which saw Christianity being the official religion for the Roman Empire(Fisher, 2017).
Images depicting royalty
Royal seat that were used by those who were in power in various societies (Steinberg, 2015). This was a clear indication of how leaders were respected in the community.
The above picture shows a royal seat called Duho. This seat was used to facilitate the communication between the leaders and the spirits where they sought for advice regarding various issues such as whether to go for war or not. The seat was used only by the chief or any important visitor to the community which was a clear indication of good management practices in the community.
