Question:

The state of sports governance: Are you leading or lagging?

Read and Comment on the Birkbeck Report. Find similarities and differences between the American and British models of sports administration.
Answer:

 The Birkbeck Report
The Birkbeck Report has had several insights on the situation of the state of sports governance. Many aspects have been developed by the report and has incorporated as much factors as possible. The report has taken survey with respect to the effective board in sports, diversity, behaviors and culture, strategy, the risks, code of sports governance and finally had a brief discussion on the solutions that should be undertaken for safeguarding the sports management. The report has taken into account many aspects including the involvement of people for the purpose of getting a better collection of information. Facts can be termed to be first hand due to the fact that they were based on interviews and developments of reports from surveyed individuals. The report can be considered to bring up the real situation in the sports governance. All the factors that have been undertaken have been discussed in a nutshell with the effective development in the information that is given and aided in a general conclusion and the development of some of the given solutions.
The report acknowledges that there has been an increase in the governance standards have risen as compared to the past twenty years. As much as there could be something else that can be done, several measure should be put in place to make sure or aid in the positive progress in the long run. The fact that the sport bodies have had scrutiny on the media platforms has been raised. There has been a number of endeavors such as doping that has mostly affected most of the sports management systems all over the world basing on the issue. This fact is still affecting the sports governance to date. There are bits of corruptions that the management are made to be involved in without their consciousness at all. This has led to the mistrust that the public has towards the body. The report gives a full highlight on the current situation and what people think about the governance body at large. Some of the results that are made are negative and the majority being positive in the favor of the body.
From the report, many people from the survey agree that the board members have and possess the required skills in the understanding of the complexity and the running of the organization. This agreement is in terms of the board running together with the sizes and the number of individuals who should run certain sectors. The report highlights some bits of complains concerning the training of the board members and personnel. A good number of people from the report have the insight that most of the board member do not receive training in the fundamental specific areas. They are made to continue with work without having the good training in the development and mitigation of various problems that might come along the way. Some believe that training and evaluation goes in hand. The report itself has had the ability to have a relation of the two aspects. Evaluation is done for the purpose of having the decision of whether training is needed or not. The survey gives and portrays a good number of people having the suggestion that the members are not evaluated. Evaluation should be done as much as possible so as to have the competency report and how people can aid in the effective management of some of the work in the sports sector.
The report has also had the incorporation of diversity. From a wide perspective, it has had and involvement of women in the board membership of sports management. A good number of people have had a negative response that it is not well represented. Women and the disabled are not so much included in the squad. The report in this case has a better highlight in the impact and one of the sectors that should be improved in the future. This can be one of the factors that should be developed and managed to have a great advancement in the development of information and information in general. This aspects have generally have the better approach in giving certain difference among the many differences and similarities in the way nations have their management of sports.
Similarities and differences in American and British models of sports administration
There are no major similarities in the sport management model of the America and the British. This is due to the geographical extent in which the models have been used. All the same, there have been the development of importance of the governing bodies. Both have the insight and the aim of getting into the development of a common basis and rules that should be followed by any other individual or nation. They have had the setup of parameters that should be followed when having to do with sports matters. The anti-doping rules that they have are the same and suit any other nation that is interested in them.
Differences
The major difference is in the way of management. The British model has the characteristics of two features which are: the pyramid structure and the relegation and promotion system. Under the so called pyramid structure, the management has formed the clubs based on the base pyramid. Getting up the pyramid will be based in a competitive scale that is decided upon. A team is promoted basing on their performance and the least performed teams are relegated and given chance to improve in the relegation state. This is so different with the American model where they have the basing of closed championships. They major on multiple sports where they base all the aspects on points. There is no chance in which a team is relegated as in the British model. They do a major in what is called the super league. This although has been improved by the development of almost a common body that incorporates the two models together called UEFA. This with time will have a great importance and information on improvement of the sport management.
Conclusion
The Birkbeck Report has generally brought up the better set up and the situation at the sports management. In a nut shell, there should be many amendments to be done including documentation of the available aspects of the sports management. Individuals should be made to confirm the situation every time there is a change. The impact of the board members should be felt by the public in general and developed with the development of better results.
