Question:

Each term is to have two scholarly sources. You may use a .com as an additional source. These are to be typed, three pages per term, Normal margins, normal fonts, with a reference page. Remember to cite your sources within your text and include a reference page. Please read the Wikipedia article on plagiarism if you don’t know what plagiarism is.
The assignment for each of these terms is as follows: Define and discuss. You must give a scholarly definition, NOT your definition. Choose a question to answer in your paper. It is too difficult to do a good overview of any concept in a three page paper.
How to approach the terms: If the term you are working with for example, a particular city, learn why this particular city is important and we are still studying it in an Urban Sociology class two or three or four thousand years later. What did the way of life, for example, of the people in that city, contribute to later urban developments? What do we learn about the pre-requisites of an urban center?

Answer:

Introduction
Paris is one of those places that has had a continuous impact on the Western History. Paris is known to be the medieval reinvention and this was a successful urban initiative as later it set the precedent for the other cities and Paris was considered as a role model. Lutetia, is a Roman city from which the medieval reinvention of Paris happened. The urbanization that was associated with Paris was due to the huge influence from the French monarchy, the artisans, the elite bourgeoisie, day laborers and the first university. This urban phenomenon of the medieval Paris has been inspiring the urban developments for many years and still continues to do so.
Way of Life
The today’s Paris is the microcosm of the civilization in the medieval times in Paris. In medieval Paris, the walled cities of that time, now seems to be quite small, with everything being swallowed up by the urban complexities of the modern times. The current economy, culture and the society of Paris, still have a huge influence from the medieval times (Bhaskar, Hogan & Archfield, 2016). The medieval Paris is responsible for greater infrastructure as during this period the growth and improvements of roads, towns, and bridges accelerated. According to Simone Roux, during the medieval times, the agrarian lordship developed hugely and contributed to the medieval period immensely (Roux, 2014). This has had a huge impact on the urban development as this lead to the expansion of villages into a more modernized version. This also helps in the growth of commerce in Paris and the ancillary development. The medieval Paris have a society that was stratified and very competitive. This competitiveness in the society helps in the development of stronger and better communities in the later urban developments. During the medieval time, one of the staple foods of the Parisians was bread and one food item that has impacted the urban development in the gastronomy aspect is bread. At the medieval time, the wine was introduced in Paris by Rome and later this led to the development and advancement by the Champagne, Orleans, and Burgundy (Dong & Dong, 2011). The people’s lifestyle was also very distinctive in the medieval period. People preferred to travel for long distance and like exploring new places. This culture is prominent in today’s modern world too with people becoming explorers and wanderers. This urban culture of the medieval period has a huge impact on the western culture and it still continues to do so. The literature and art also moved from the medieval to the modern age. This is due to the utilization of the classical models in the medieval time that helps in the expansion of literature and art and this later helped in the urban development, as the transformation from the medieval to the modern age is due to this experimentation (Marshall & Amerasinghe, 2017).
Learning of the Prerequisites of the Urban Center
Paris was a role model for every other country during the medieval period. It was a trendsetter that was copied and followed by the entire world. This is still a case in various fields. Some of the most important evolutions that have set an example for the urban development includes the evolution of the Louvre. The transformation from the old Louvre to the newly developed one, helped in the transformation and the advancement in the field of architecture. The lifestyle during the medieval period of people was influenced by the advancements, experiments, and the exposures (Mayer & Trevien, 2017). The people were very competitive and always looked forward to experimenting with new things. This is still the case in Paris, and the competitive nature in a different field during the medieval period influenced the current urban nature not just in Paris but all over the world. The medieval people were very hard working, but they also have a zeal for adventure, communities, and lifestyle and in many other aspects too. The current urban lifestyle is still based on the same principle and the people follow the medieval period as a classical model that inspires them for development and growth (Smith, 2017).
Conclusion
The urban sociology of the Medieval Paris is responsible for the urbanization in the current times. The medieval period struggled a lot during this tenure, but they pushed themselves towards building an advanced living environment that is considered as the metropolitan environment of today. But this metropolitan environment has been developed due to the strong foundation in the medieval period. This advancement during the medieval time helped in more experiments that were implicated to build a better lifestyle, infrastructure, and environment. Thus, the role of medieval Paris in the urbanization is immense.
