A calibration curve was plotted using the absorbance and phosphorous concentrations of the standard solutions as shown below
The concentrations of phosphorous in the samples were determined from the calibration curve. For each sample, the absorbance was read thrice and the average calculated. The results were as shown below

From the results, a 330 ml can of coca cola’s coke contain 82 mg of phosphorous. According to the information on the coca cola website, a 250 ml glass of coca cola contains 43 mg of phosphorous, which translates to approximately 57 mg of phosphorous in a 330 ml can of coke. In contrast, a 330 ml can of Pepsi contains 67 mg of phosphorous. The reported value on the company’s website is 53 mg of phosphorous per can.
According to the results obtained in this study, coke contains more phosphorous as compared to Pepsi. For both drinks, the concentrations of phosphorous obtained in this study were much higher than the values reported on the company websites.
The main source of phosphorous found in soft drink beverages comes from phosphoric acid, which is used as an additive in these drinks. Phosphoric acid is responsible for the tangy flavor of soft drink. In addition, it prevents the growth of bacteria and molds in the sugary drinks, keeping them safe for human consumption. Phosphorus is an important nutrient in the body. It is essential for healthy bones as well as optimal kidney functioning. According to the FDA, the recommended daily intake for phosphorous is 1000 mg per day.
