Question:

Article
Wendell Berry’s Wisdom:  Today’s conversation about food was started by dot-connecting writers like Berry in the 1970s.

Reflect:
Using the SQ3R reading method, consider how the authors you read are writing about place and how they view and interact with that setting/environment. Also, think about how those points of view compare to your own perceptions of what you see as your place.

Answer:

Survey:
In the article titled “Wendell Berry’s Wisdom Today’s conversation about food was started by dot-connecting writers like Berry in the 1970s”, Pollan (2009) tried to explain how the conversation about food and farming in the United States have been initiated in the early 1970’s by writers such as Wendell Berry as well as Frances Moore Lappé, Barry Commoner and Joan Gussow. According to Pollan (2009), these authors played a profound role of making dot connections between several important and interrelated concepts such as price of food, price of oil, biodiversity of soil based life forms, plant health as well as the health of the tertiary consumers such as humans. Their observations have been significantly influenced by the strong grasp of ecological sciences and have become the become the cornerstones for modern discourse on food and farming and achieving a sustainable future. In this essay, the article has been discussed using the SQ3R model in which the main topic have been surveyed, the topic questions have been analyzed and the key information related to the article has been read, recited and reviewed to gain a better understanding on what the author intended to say (Komara et al., 2018).
Question:
The topic is about how authors such as Wendell Berry as well as Frances Moore Lappé, Barry Commoner and Joan Gussow have influenced the modern discourse of food and agriculture and how such concepts can be related to ecological sciences as well as economics and health, helping us to connect the dots between these important concepts (Berry, 2018; Moore-Lappé et al., 2016).
The topic is trying to answer how food, and agriculture can be viewed as a part of a larger concept of “health in soil, plant animal and man” and how the ideas of ecology, health and economics can be inter related, and how by studying these factors, the authors have laid the early cornerstones for the discussions (Berry, 2018).
The ideas discussed in the topic by Pollan (2009), helps to understand how farming and agriculture should be based upon the models of natural systems or ecologies, which can be seen for example in forests, and how such a model can be used to develop a sustainable future for the industry. The topic moreover helps to understand the potential avenues of studies that can be done to understand whether the concepts discussed by the Authors cited in the report can be used in current and future discussions and how the knowledge can be effectively implemented into action.
Read/ Recite/ Review:
Pollan (2009) argued that the recent activity of Michelle Obama on organic vegetable gardening on the South Lawn of the White House can be considered as an important milestone in the Food Revolution, and shows a change in the perspectives of the global leaders towards the importance of farming and agriculture to the food industry. Such change in perspectives has been influenced by studies that have clearly shown how the health of the soil, the plants is associated with the health of humans as well as the costs of the farm products (Commoner, 2016).
From the article it becomes evident that sustainability of agriculture industry is dependent upon the ecology of the agricultural area and how unsustainable farming have resulted in an environmental crisis as well as an increase in the incidence of diseases such as type 2 diabetes and obesity. It is vital therefore that farming approaches should follow the environmentally aware strategies and work towards a better conservation of the gardens and agricultural lands to attain better productivity and environmental sustainability.
These aspects have been pivotal in all modern discussions regarding sustainable farming and agriculture, helping the leaders to device policies towards a sustainable future, thus showing how the early discussions have been pivotal to develop our understanding about the topic.
