3.Find an object in space. Describe your object.Describe any interesting facts.

Answers:

1.The main evidence for determining the age of both earth and the universe comes from the findings of the radiometric dating of rocks. Radiometric dating is the scientific process of determining the age of rocks by observing the decay of the radioactive elements in the rocks.
To determine the age of earth, samples are collected from rock strata. Preference is given to strata found deep below the earth surface. These deep lying strata will give more accurate information since they represent among the first rocks to be formed during the formation of the Earth. Example are the findings of geochemist Claire Patterson who took rock samples from the bottom of the deep oceans. He then used a lead isotope radiometric method to date the samples.
To determine the age of the universe, rock samples are collected from the meteorites that have impact the earth. The samples are obtained from the landing sites of the meteorites, usually resultant craters such as the Odessa Meteor Crater. Dating these samples provide information on the age of the universe. Similarly, rock and soil samples brought back to Earth by Lunar missions can also be dated to give the age of the universe.
2.The Hubble Space Telescope mission is a space mission that launched a powerful telescope into space on April 24th The Hubble Space Telescope was to take high resolution photos of the universe and its elements and relay them back to Earth. Since its launch the telescope has undergone modifications that have greatly improved its power, allowing it to relay clearer phots with time.
The telescope is located in Earth’s low orbit at an altitude of 340 miles above earth’s surface and inclined at an angle of 28.5o to the equator. The telescope takes an average of 1 hour 35 minutes to complete an orbit.
At launch, the Hubble Space Telescope cost $1.5 billion. However by the year 2010, the cumulative cost for the telescope was $10 billion. This is owing to the fact that a lot improvements have been made to the telescope to make it more efficient.
The Hubble Space Telescope sends up to 10 terabytes of data yearly about the universe. These data have been instrumental in providing astronomers and space experts in general with a better understanding of the universe. One of the telescope’s most iconic images is that of the Eagle Nebula (M16) which provided an insight into the process that forms the stars. (NASA, 2018).
3.The 433 Eros asteroid is a Near-Earth Object (NEO). Daytime temperatures on Eros reach up to 100 degrees Celsius with the nighttime temperature dropping as low as -150 degrees Celsius. The asteroid has an average diameter of 16.8 kilometers. Eros is however not spherical in shape, but rather pea-nut shaped.
Eros is located between Earth and Mars, and it initially orbited Mars but will fall into Earth’s orbit in the next 2 million years. The asteroid generally has a pinkish color, with the exception of its eastern side, that has a greenish-blue appearance.
Though Eros has a composition that can be interpreted as anhydrous, recent observations and research have established the presence of OH (Hydroxide). This has given possibility of water in the asteroid (Andrew, Ellen, Joshua, & Sunshine, 2017).
