Question:
Describe knowledge for global, regional, national and industry issues with situations related to engines.
Answer:
Since the invention of the automotive engine, we have witnessed a lot of advancements and changes in this industry owing to the increased competition that brought in new technology and in some cases proved to be efficient. This paper discusses the issues brought about by the auto engine related to global, regional, national and industrial issues.
Modern industrial society deems transport of central importance and should be stated that it is responsible for 20% of the energy consumed worldwide (Kalghatgi, 2015). Transport energy is seen to increase by 2040 by around 40% as per the current trends. The internal combustion engines are still expected to power the transport industry with around 90% share in the near future. Climate change is a major global concern and engine emission is one of the contributors of the same. Crude oil is used to process liquid fuels that run engines despite of the alternatives that have been found with the continued research of enhancing efficiency in the transport industry. The increase in number of engines on the road increases the amount of automotive emissions. This led to the creation of new engine systems that minimize the CO2 emissions for instance in 2017, a 12.6% drop in C02 was recorded in the newly produced cars (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2013).
The regional and national issues concerned with engines can be looked at as one aspect. Supply and demand of energy sources for the transport industry, just like any other, is influenced by the economic and political factors such as security of the energy. Unstable political regions will influence the transport industry in that region such that investors would opt out of investing in the business due to uncertainty. Certain regions have imposed stringent rules on the cars to be used on roads thereby curbing cases of automotive emissions from un-road worthy vehicles.
Increased knowledge and awareness amongst drivers of certain regions has also influenced issues related to engines. For instance, 2% of fuel is the amount used up to drive through the city and the rest will be burned up as waste while braking and trying to accelerate in short distances (mostly witnessed in traffic jams) (National Research Council, Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences, Board on Energy and Environmental Systems, Committee on the Assessment of Technologies for Improving Light-Duty Vehicle Fuel Economy, 2011). Likewise, driving on under inflated tires can cause the engine to burn up more fuel with consumption increasing by 3% for every under inflation of 1 psi. A minimum of 2 km is required to warm up an engine therefore in some areas drivers know that short distances can easily decrease the fuel economy of the car.
Lastly, globalization has created a competitive environment for the automotive industry between domestic and international engine manufacturers. The major policies and trends that influence the automotive industry show engine and car producers receiving pressure to emphasize on costs by aspects of globalizations. This forces them to seek manufacturing processes of low cost, and also consider alternative sources of energy due to the volatility of oil supply, and as a result driving the need for inventive energy solutions by the various competitors in the industry. The demand for emissions control devices would be emphasized because diesel particulate filters or catalytic converters are vital to combustion engines (Beule & Narayanan, 2015). However, the move is not expected to come instantly since the mass-production of engines that use alternative sources such as natural gas is not cost-efficient especially to the middle and lower-income consumers.
