Historical Perspectives of Early Childhood Education
Jean Piaget
Jean Piaget spent most of his life studying children’s cognitive development and is well renowned in the Early Childhood profession as the first to describe how each child creates their own mental image of the world. He believed that children seek balance or equilibrium in their understandings of experiences and that learning occurs through assimilation and accommodation.
Piaget identified the following stages of development:

Sensorimotor (birth to two years)
Preoperational (two to seven years)
Concrete Operations (seven to 11 years)
Formal Operations (eleven years +)

Piaget’s Psychology of Early Childhood Development

Early Childhood education is shaped by a myriad of policies that are centered on the nurturing of young children as they grow. The formulation of these polices is pegged on the Piagtet’s theory of cognitive development. The early childhood education curriculum presently recognizes the need for professionalism in the childhood educators. This paper seeks to review learning, development and infusion of children play in education.
Piaget Jean a renowned psychologist came up with a development model that describes the cognitive development of children. Intellectual development is analyzed base on the ability to make judgments, knowledge as well as thoughts. In his studies, Piaget did focus mainly on infant’ abilities, children and teenagers (Wood, 2001). The stages of development were categorized as follows: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational and formal operational. The stages play a significant role in the future intellectual behavior.
Sensorimotor  stage runs from birth to the age of between 18-24 months, preoperational (from 18-24 months through early childhood age of 7), concrete operational (age 7-12 years) while formal operational runs from adolescence to adulthood. During birth, infants are only concerned with what they can see, what is immediately next to them. Their development involves shaking objects and putting anything that they touch in their mouths ( Huitt, 2003). In the preoperational stage; the toddler enters a level where they begin to learn things symbolically. In the Australian curriculum, children are given an opportunity to play with symbols as they try to cope with memory. For instance, when interacting with children, I often strike a conversation in form of questions to see to it that they recall what we engaged on previously. The last two stages of development are dictated by the first two stages.
