Question:

Your task is to research and write a report about sustainability in an IT business. The term”sustainability” was coined in a report for the World Commission on Environment and Development which urged businesses to be sustainable without destroying the natural resources of the environment. These days sustainability is a core element in any organisation’s strategy to reduce costs, preserve resources and make businesses more unique. Implementing sustainability in business is a challenging exercise that demands communication, collaboration, information and management strategies, guidelines, procedures and policies between organisations, vendors, manufacturers and consumers.
You need to undertake some research about what happens to old computer hardwareand electronic  components once a computer or smart device such as a tablet, smartphone, laptop or larger sized computer malfunctions or simply ages and is replaced. This is a global problem. Your report needs to identify where in the world these computers or their component parts end up.
Assignment1 requires you to write a neat and a professional PDF report that willcover the following aspects of your product/service.
1. Identification (a description of the product/service) and explanation of where it was made, by whom and for what purpose2. Purpose (why have you chosen this particular product/service? talk about its need, the IT company which purchased it and for what purpose did they use it.)3. Assimilation (Are there similar product/service (s) floating in the market? What went wrong with this one? What efforts (if any) were made to fix it? Why was it thrown away? )4. Sustainability (how could your product/service have been kept working? explain in depth its functions and features. Explain where it has now finished up and what it is being used for.)5. Suitability (Do you think this is a suitable purpose for this hardware to perform? Identify the advantages and disadvantages of this business cycle. Conclude your report with recommendations on how this process could beimproved)There is no minimum or maximum length

Answer:

Introduction:
Sustainability is the process of balancing between economic growths of businesses and environmental conditions. Advancement in technology should be made without destroying the natural resources. With expansion of IT business, number of computers are increasing day by day. Research found that around 2 billion computers has been sold all over the world by the end of 2015 (Zealand, 2014). According to some statistics, the number of smartphone users in Australia is estimated to be around 16.69 million (Okumus and Bilgihan, 2014). These electronic devices has a life cycle of 3-10 years. Problem arises with disposal after the end of their life cycle. If they are disposed open then they might create environmental problems. Therefore, they should be used sustainably such that the hardware components can be reused. The following paragraphs will enlighten on the companies that creates them, purpose of their creation, process of assimilation, their sustainable use followed by their suitability.
Discussion:
Identification:
The product that will be discussed in this report is a mainframe computer. They are used mostly by large organisations mainly for storing huge amount of data. Special functions are performed on the data like processing, data transactions and payrolls. Mainframe computers that are used in various organisations are purchased to keep a record of employee statistics. The first mainframe computer was developed in 1950’s and it occupied the entire room. IBM manufactures these computers and ruled the market for manufacturing mainframe computers for a number of years.
Purpose:
It has been noted that the use of mainframe computer is continuing to grow in Australia. They have become important for daily operations of large organisation. Public sectors, private sectors and around 71% of the Fortune 500 companies are using mainframes to smoothly carry on their business operations. It is facilitating e-business. Health care, banking, finance has also been benefited by these computers. IT companies purchase mainframe computer to keep their database safe and secure from unauthorized access. A number of companies in Australia has purchased mainframe computers like Data Republic. This company provides a Senate platform for data exchange between two organisations. To facilitate this process Data Republic will require a mainframe that will store all the necessary data and will help in processing the data. Apart from Data Republic, ANZ bank is also using mainframes to perform financial transactions, host databases of customer accounts and so on (Christensen, 2013). Mainframe computers will continue to provide service to various organisations and institutions.
Assimilation:
Apart from IBM there are several other manufacturers of mainframe computers like Unisys, Honeywell Burroughs and so on. However, today the two leading manufacturers of them are IBM and Unisys. Most of the IT companies use IBM mainframes including Data Republic. However, one of the disadvantage is that the mainframes did not contain software as it was considered that the customers would write their own. This made the mainframes vulnerable to external attacks. Efforts were made to eliminate these risks by implementing various strategies. Data were encrypted so that even after any theft it will not be understood by anyone. Initiatives were also taken to implement several data policies to protect the data. All these actions required various software to be loaded on the mainframe computer. However, the computer was nearing the end of its life and needed to be disposed. This was the reason for throwing it and purchasing a new one.
Sustainability:
With the growing population, the number of electronic wastes are increasing.  This might be hazardous and can cause landfills or waterways. Therefore, correct methods should be adopted for reusing them. The mainframe computer that was thrown away could have been reused (Kiddee Naidu and Wong, 2013). The electronic components that has aged could be replaced, which would make the computer continue its life for some more years. However, the computer has landed up as the source of secondary raw materials. The outer covering of the mainframe computer has been recycled to get tin and has been stored for future use (Khaliq Rhamdhani Brooks and Masood, 2014). The electronic components in a computer contains metals like lead, copper, gold. Electronic components from the mainframe were carefully separated and reclaimed.
Suitability:
The method by which the computer has been recycled and being used today is completely suitable. The recycled raw materials are being utilized to make other devices. This business cycle has few advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are that it is coat benefit. The Price at which the used mainframe computers is sold will help a particular organization to get back a certain amount of its cost price, thus making it cost effective. However, it suffers from disadvantages too. The cost that is spent to purchase a new mainframe that will replace the old, is much high than the cost required to repair the old components.
Some recommendations to improve this business cycle is listed below:

The company using mainframe computer should put efforts to maintain the computer so that the life cycle of it can be increased.
Instead of throwing it away, it can be used in other services of the company. For example, the sectors where only storing of data is required. Processing of data need more service than storing. Therefore, the old mainframe computers can be utilized for simple data storage.

Conclusion:
From the above discussions, it can be concluded that disposal of electronic devices like computers, smartphones have become an alarming problem in today’s world. With the increasing population, this problem will become stronger. However, the vast usage of these devices in various sectors cannot be stopped. Therefore, an alternative has been planned to manage the e-waste. Companies should reuse old devices in order to eliminate the hazardous effects of open dumping electronic wastes.
