Hunter Kruse
It was not uncommon for artists in Monet’s time to experiment with technique, style and perspectives, but what Monet heralded in the name of Impressionism was to inspire a plethora of painters from different schools and ages. His paintings, that initially seemed impromptu were actually products of intricate studying of the object meditative planning of techniques. The works, therefore had a recurrent pattern as he developed a unique style of painting with some exclusive design strategies he employed for giving an outlet to his emotions.
Two of his works can be cited for elaborating on the similarity of his technique; The House of the Parliament, and Sunset in Venice. Monet followed his artistic impulse in observing the same and similar subjects in different times of the day. A master of colors, Monet has presented both the paintings as a fine rendering of light and atmosphere. The abstraction is deliberate, the merging of colors and boundaries characteristic of the Impressionist style. What he intends to capture is not the physicality of the subject, but the transitory nature of time and nature, and the effects it has on the subject. The extra details and emphasis on reflection is an interesting aspect to consider in this context. The time is possibly dusk, the river is calm and Monet uses light brush strokes and dark colors to inform the mood. Characteristically, he leaves the onlookers with an impression of things, blurring the physical outlines of the subjects and letting the colors overlap for a visual impression that is aesthetically appealing in its own right.
